Mosaic Medical Center in Maryville is announcing the opening of a Women's Health Clinic at its Bedford, Iowa location.
The clinic will be open on the first Tuesday of each month starting this September.
The move comes as many rural hospitals are closing birthing centers and women's care facilities. The northwest corners region was at risk of becoming a maternity desert, says Nurse Practitioner with Mosaic, Ali Sporleder.
"There are so few rural clinics and hospitals that are offeirng obstetrical care. It's called a maternity desert, because they are so few and far between."
In rural areas, it can be dificult to recruit and hire specialists, and for small hospitals the issue often comes down to funding, Sporleder says.
"OB is not necesarily a money-maker, but it's necessary. It's necessary for the health of our women. So that's where we try to balance the needs of our people with trying to keep a facility open. And for some facilities, that's just so hard."
Mosaic hopes the new clinic will fill gaps, reduce the burden of travel, and foster strong patient-provider relationships.
It will give the opportunity for women in Southwest Iowa, who might otherwise forego care, to access it close to home. It will offer a full spectrum of obstretrical and gynecological care, as well as menopause management, family planning, and women's wellness advice.
Sporleder will join this Friday's Health Minute on KXCV to discuss women's care at greater length. Tune it at 9:05 AM to catch their conversation.
