The abrupt resignation of Tye Parsons from the Maryville City Council this week left an empty seat at Monday night's meeting.
Parsons submitted his resignation in a letter to Mayor Darren Merrill at noon on Monday. Parsons made the decision in order to priortize time with his family.
City Manager Ryan Heiland says the city has not discussed the process for filling Parsons' vacancy, but they have faced the issue before.
"It hasn't been formally decided yet but when we did this the last time a councilmember resigned we had an application process."
Parsons himself joined the position mid-term, when he was appointed to fill a seat vacated by Renee Rydell back in 2019. The city will push out applications on social media. Interested residents can then step forward, Heiland says.
"They'll be able to fill out an application, submit it to the city clerk, and at that point council will review the applicaitons and make a decision."
At Monday's meeting, each of his former fellow councilmembers expressed gratitude for Parsons' efforts in his six and a half years on the council, noting his leadership during the pandemic, and his guidance of major city projects.
Parsons is a graduate of Northwest Missouri State University, where he works as a Grants Coordinator.
