As Missouri’s black bear population continues to grow, it’s more important than ever for residents to understand how to safely coexist with these powerful animals.

Join the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) for a free virtual program, “Black Bears of Missouri,” on July 25 from 1–2 p.m. This online event is open to all ages and will offer valuable insights into black bear behavior and tips on preventing conflicts.

During the July 25 program, MDC Naturalist Wendy Lott will share fascinating insights about Missouri’s black bear population. Experts estimate that more than 1,000 bears currently live in the state, with the population growing at a steady rate of about nine percent each year. Most of these bears are found in southern Missouri.

Lott will discuss the annual life cycle of black bears and provide practical tips on how to prevent bears from becoming too comfortable around homes—especially when it comes to food sources.

In addition to this virtual program, MDC staff across Missouri are offering a variety of in-person and online events. To explore upcoming opportunities, visit: mdc.mo.gov/events
