Tick season has begun in Missouri

Experts are noting that Tick Season has begun across the State of Missouri, and they are full of disease! Around half a dozen tick-borne disease are known to circulate in the state, including the much-feared Lyme Disease. Many of these diseases have been discovered in the last few decades as a warming climate encourages tick territory to spread. Public health officials are always learning of advances in prevention and treatment. While ticks pose a danger to those enjoying the great outdoors, many DO NOT carry disease, and a tick bite does not necessarily mean a sickness is coming. According to the state Department of Health, those who are bitten should promptly remove the tick with tweezers and clean the bite area with soap and water. Symptoms such as fever, rash, joint pain, stomach upset, or other unexplained ailments might indicate a tick-borne disease, and folks should contact their healthcare provider for treatment. The best practice? Prevent tick bites in the first place. Experts say to wear DEET insect repellent when heading outdoors, avoid long grass and forest boundaries, and check yourself for ticks after time spent outdoors. Learn more at health.mo.gov.
