The Quilters of the Department of Corrections

Missouri prisons have been overwhelmed with quilting donations. A documentary released this year on Netflix features a program run by the state's Restorative Jusitce Organization in which inmates make quilts. The finished works are then donated to foster children and other youth in need in Missouri. Since the release of the film, the Department of Corrections says it has received a deluge of donated quilting materials, from fabric to sewing machines to thread. The Department says it is "awestruck by the generosity, and by the beautiful work of the inmates in the Resotaritve Justice Program," But it HAS RAN OUT of storage room for quilting supplies.

Monetary donations are certainly welcome and will support both the quilting program and other Restorative Justive projects, from inmates growing fresh food for food banks, to those building furniture and toys for youth or training therapy animals for adoption. The Documentary, titled The Quilters, features men in the South Central Correctional Facility outside of St Louis and is directed by Jenifer McShane. It streams on Netflix.
