The Missouri Department of Conservation wants to remind people how to safely celebrate this holiday season

Firework

It's time for the celebrations of our country's independence to begin. With celebrations happening, the Missouri Department of Conservation wants to remind people how to safely celebrate this holiday season.

When handling fireworks make sure to light them in a space where it can not start a fire, that means where sparks can strike dry grass, leaves or other fire fuel. For safety, either have an approved fire extinguisher or water to douse flames with, if they ignite. Fireworks are prohibited at conservation areas. Make sure to check with your local city council ordinances for the regulations of firework use.

When lighting a fire make sure to do it under the right conditions. Steer clear from burning when there is dry grass, high temperatures, low huimidity and wind. These conditions make fire almost impossible to control after started.

If you see a fire getting out of control, the first call made should be to 911 and report a fire getting out of control. Forest arson happens, people set fires recklessly. If there is something suspicious call 800-392-1111 to report potential arson crimes. All calls are anonymous and rewards are possible.
