The Wabash Railroad connected Council Bluffs with St. Louis, Chicago, and points beyond during its heyday in the early 19 hundreds. It passed through Maryville, crossing the Northwest Campus, stopping at a now abandoned Depot off Walnut Street, and continuing on through Conception Junction and Chillicothe.

By the 1980s, it was shutting down and a group of citizens in Iowa gathered together to preserve the railroad bed as a multi-use trail. That trail is now maintained as the Wabash Trace Nature Trail. Each summer, it comes alive with events. Director of the Southwest Iowa Nature Trails Project Rebecca Catle-Lochlan says they kick things off this weekend with a ride in southern Iowa.

The trail is gentle, and the ride totals about 20 miles. Castle says there is likely to be lots of conversation along the way.

Riders are invited to gather in Malvern, Iowa at 10 AM to kick off the ride. Vans will be available in Shenandoah at 9 AM for those wishing to drop a car at the ride's terminus. You can find out more on the Wabash Nature Trail Facebook Page.
