June, Pride Month, is an opportunity for the country's LGBT community to both celebrate and focus on advocacy. In Nebraska, the Lincoln based organization "Out Nebraska" is marking Pride month with a series of parades, but also efforts to reach more communities. Out Nebraska Communications Manager Owen Rush said at events, they have focused on distributing resources and information.

Rush says, "We worked on a couple of different magazines on, like how to change your name, you know, information about pronouns, providing the community with more information about the LGBTQ community and also resources in Nebraska letting people know what they can do and how to make those voices heard."

The organization is also using Pride Month as an opportunity to rebrand itself. Rush said the group is stressing resiliency, as it rolls out new branding.

"Our new logo is very bold and the colors are also striking," said Rush. "The 'E' looks like a waving flag to let us know that we're here, we're stronger than ever and we're not going anywhere, and that there are regular, corn-fed Nebraskans who are queer in Nebraska."

Recent court decisions and legislative efforts have created challenges for many LGBTQ midwesterners, and Americans, particularly trans folks. Just this spring, the Nebraska legislature banned trans students from playing on sports teams that align with their gender identity.
