Kansas City shows up boldly and celebrates diverse community

Bold & Gold 50 years of KC Pride

Kansas City celebrates its 50th Pride Festival this weekend with events across the city. It's centerpiece is a Parade running Saturday morning from the Old Westport Neighborhood to Theis Park just south of the Nelson-Adkins Museum. Organizers say, despite excitement over the anniversary, there has been some dificulty attracting sponsors. Many companies pulled support for the pride celebrations this year. One of the event's organizers James Moran said in an interview on KCUR's 'Up-To-Date' that this issue is not unique to Kansas City.

He attributed the loss of support, in part, to the Trump Administration's crackdown on diversity programs. Organizers have been undettered and say the event promises to deliver on their mission of celebrating diverse community and "showing up boldly."

The first pride celebrations in the city involved picnics, live music, and dancing back in the summer of 1975. Moran says that history still inspires the city's LGBT leaders today.
