Juenteenth is celebrated across the US this week. The holiday falls each year on the nineteenth of the month. Board Member of the St Joseph Museums and an inductee of the City's 'Black History Hall of Fame' Drew Brown says the day marks the end of slavery in the US.
Brown stated, "As you probably know, the Juneteenth celebration marks the end of the Civil War. The last vestiges of the Confederate Forces surrendered in Texas. So every year there is a commemoration of that fact."
Celebrations often focus on black history, culture, and liberation. In St Joseph events are taking place all this week with a gala on Thursday and a parade on Saturday morning. There is two-day vendor fair, a fashion show, live music, and a Sunday picnic. The events are organized by the St. Joseph City Museums. Brown says there is much to celebrate.
Brown said, "St. Joseph is fortunate in that it has a considerable black history."
You can find out more about all the events at SaintJoseph Museum.org/Juneteenth. Further afield, events in Kansas City will center around a music and cultural festival taking place all weekend long.
