Residents looking to safely dispose of household hazardous waste will have the opportunity this Saturday in Maryville. The Nodaway County Maintenance Barn will host a special collection center from 8 a.m. to noon at 1516 East Halsey Street.
The event is open to residents of Atchison, Gentry, Holt, Nodaway, and Worth counties. A valid ID will be required.
Community Planner Kirk Kopper with the Northwest Missouri Regional Council of Governments says this is a safe and convenient way for people to clean out dangerous materials from around the home.
"We usually have four events a year and then we have about 20 to 30 people show up to each event. There's an education portion to make sure that people know what they can and can't throw away because there is a lot of stuff we don't want going into the trash, if possible.", says Kopper.
Items accepted include bleach and ammonia-based cleaners, fertilizers, pesticides, and other hazardous household products. However, latex paint and alkaline batteries will not be accepted. All products should be kept in their original packaging and not mixed together.
