The Missouri State Legislature ended their session last week two days early

The Missouri State Legislature ended their session last week when senators vacated Jefferson City on Wednesday, May 14th; that's two days early. The House of Representatives met for a final day on Thursday the 15th before they concluded their session. KXCV news spoke with State Representative Jeff Farnan about his takeaways from the session. Serving for his third year as representative of District 1, which encompasses the northwest corner of the state, Farnan said it was a productive year.

That bill reformed licensing for funeral home employees in the state, allowing the practice to be taught through apprenticeships. It was part of a larger package which addressed licensing standards for a number of professions in the state.

The biggest highlights for Farnan related to laws which adressed affordability for Missouri residents and businesses, he says.

We eliminated the sales tax on diapers. Farnan also discussed the legislature's blockage of a voter-approved abortion measure.

We passed strong pro-life legislation.

That measure relates to Amendment 3, which made abortion LEGAL in the Missouri last fall through voter approval. But, as Farnan notes, the legislature has pushed back. Instead of following the results of last year's election, it is offering a counter-proposal that strictly limits abortion access but does not ban it in all cases. Voters will have their say on the latest proposal this fall.

Although the legislature has adjourned, lawmakers may be called back to Jefferson City in early June for a special session.
KXCV News will air a longer version of Farnan's comments next week.
