Special Legislative Session focuses on state's response to severe storms that took place

Governor Mike Kehoe has called state lawmakers back to Jefferson City for a Special Legislative Session begining on Monday of next week. The session will focus on the state's response to severe - and fatal - storms which took place in the St. Louis area earlier this month. It will also task lawmakers with creating a plan to keep the Royals and the Chiefs based in Kansas City, and it will provide another opportunity for lawmakers to fund special projects which failed to pass in the regular session.

Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, Governor Kehoe said lawmakers did good work earlier this year, but he addressed unfinished business. He asked for funds to be released to provide housing assistance for Missourians displaced by storms, and the passage of an income tax reductions for those impacted. He also outlined a tax incentive proposal for the two major-league sports teams in Kansas City.

"The Kansas City Chiefs and Royals are Missouri's teams and they drive billions of dollars in economic activity through tourism, job creation, and small business, including hotels, restaurants, and retails.", says Kehoe.

Kehoe calls his incentive package the "Show-Me Sports Investment Act." The governor also asked lawmakers to fund a number of special projects, such as research and medical facilities, in the upcoming session. Many state lawmakers anticipated the return to Jefferson City. Speaking last week to KXCV, District 12 Senator Rusty Black said the ripple effects of sports and stadiums on regional economies can be substantial.

"I think overall for the citizens at this point, it will be a positive to offer something so that the Chiefs and Royals think about staying in our state.", says Black.

There is no end date set for the special session. It begins on Monday.
