With spring planting underway, the Nebraska Public Power District is reminding equipment and drone operators to “look up and look out” for power lines.
Tall farm machinery, booms, and drones coming too close to power lines can cause electrical arcs—putting operators at serious risk. NPPD's Trevor Roth stresses the importance of maintaining a safe distance: at least 20 feet from overhead lines. Spotters should be used when moving large equipment, and portable augers or elevators should be lowered during transport.
If contact with a power line occurs, stay inside the vehicle and call 911. Only exit if there’s a fire, and do so by jumping clear and shuffling away without lifting your feet.
Drone users are also urged to stay alert, as power line contact can damage equipment and disrupt service.
