May is Mental Health Awareness Month and offers the chance for people to open a dialogue with family and friends about the importance of mental health and utilizing available resources. Mental Health Nurse Practitioner at Clarinda Regional Health Center, Benn Rayment, says different factors impact mental health for those in rural areas as opposed to people in urban areas. Smaller towns bring about a greater sense of community and perseverance, but there are still times when problems need professional intervention.
"I see a sense of resiliecny in rural areas and I think that is something that I don't see as much in urban areas. I love that and I think that mentality is still true for mental health which is good to a certain degree and really not good when there is a serious problem that needs to be addressed but might not be addressed because of this drive for self reliance.", says Rayment.
Rayment adds that mental and physical health are intertwined, and untreated mental issues can add stress to organs and lead to chronic diseases.
