A much-anticipated report has been released by The Make America Healthy Again Commission
The Make America Healthy Again Commission, a group assembled by the Trump Administration to direct its health policy, released a much-anticipated report on Thursday. The effort was led by health secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. whose claims about vaccines, chronic illness, obesity, and other public health challenges have sparked controversy, and occasionally gone against science. The plan focuses on the negative impacts of processed foods in the American diet. It connects their rise to industrial agriculture.
Ahead of its release, farmers and agricultural groups across the midwest voiced concerns about the report's impact on genetically modified foods, pesticide use, and other common industry practices. Before becoming health secretary, Kennedy questioned the safety of pesticides, and has specifically called out glyphosate, a common pesticide ingredient, as quote "toxic".
In comments this week, Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley adressed the concerns of the region's farmers. He said he spoke with Secretary Kennedy about the importance of pesticides in food production.
Now Kennedy agreed that these tools farmers use...
The roughly 70 page report does not make specific policy reccomendations, but it calls for new research into how nutrition and lifestyle choices affect health outcomes, and calls for new technologies to be applied to the country's healthcare challenges.
