The Missouri Department of Conservation is looking for bird experts

The Missouri Department of Conservation is looking for experienced birders to volunteer for the 2025 North American Breeding Bird Survey, running from May 27 to July 7.

Eight Missouri routes still need coverage, including Graydon, Ohio, Lucerne, Milford, Richland, Doe Run, West Plains, and Hayti. Volunteers will drive a 24.5-mile route, stopping every half-mile to record all birds seen or heard during three-minute counts. The survey starts a half-hour before sunrise and takes about five hours.

Strong bird ID skills, especially by sound, are essential and volunteers must complete an online training. This data helps track bird populations and long-term trends, which is crucial as North America has lost nearly 3 billion birds since 1970.
