STEM related jobs are fast growing and high paying

Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics and STEM-related jobs are among the fastest-growing and highest-paying careers in Missouri, according to the Missouri Economic Research and Information Center.

Employment in science, technology, engineering, and math fields is projected to grow 12.6% from 2022 to 2032—nearly two and a half times faster than the 4.3% average growth for all occupations. By 2032, Missouri is expected to add over 49,000 STEM-related jobs, bringing the total to more than 437,000 positions.

These careers also come with higher wages. In 2023, the average wage for all Missouri jobs was $57,580. For STEM and STEM-related roles, that number jumps to $91,338.

Education is key. Of the 196 STEM-related occupations in the state, 192 require postsecondary education—mostly bachelor’s or master’s degrees, though some call for associate degrees or high school diplomas.

STEM roles range from lab scientists and IT professionals to engineers, statisticians, and data analysts—careers that officials say are not only in demand but also vital to Missouri’s economic future.
