Missouri report on March jobs

Missouri added nearly 14,000 jobs in March, according to the state’s latest monthly jobs report. Nonfarm payroll employment increased by 13,900 jobs, with private industry accounting for most of that growth, adding 12,600 jobs, while government employment rose by 1,300.

The strongest job gains came from leisure and hospitality, which added 5,800 positions, followed by education and health services, and trade and transportation sectors. However, job losses were seen in professional and business services and the information sector.

Despite the job growth, Missouri’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate ticked up to 3.8 percent in March, a tenth of a point higher than February, and two-tenths higher than a year ago.

Year-over-year, Missouri has added just over 20,000 jobs. Health care and education led the way, while sectors like leisure and hospitality, manufacturing, and construction saw declines.

Missouri continues to outperform the national average in key workforce metrics, including labor force participation and employment to population ratio. And the state’s unemployment rate remains below the national average of 4.2 percent, a trend that’s held for more than nine years.
