President Donald Trump's decision to dissolve the Department of Education will have a ripple effect

President Donald Trump's decision to dissolve the Department of Education will have a ripple effect for public school districts both large and small across the country.

Locally, it is something officials in the Maryville School District are keeping an eye on.
Maryville receives about two million dollars annually from the federal government, making up about ten percent of the district's yearly budget.

Maryville School District assistant superintendent Philip Pohren says it's a wait-and-see situation if those federal dollars are slashed or if the responsibility is shifted to the state to distribute those same funds to its districts.
The move hasn't affected Maryville to this point and funds are still coming in, but Pohren adds, if cuts do trickle down to the local level, they will continue to do what is best for the students.

"Parents are concerned because an Individualized Education Plan (IEP), those dollars come from federal. We will continue to do what is right for kids. We are not affected financially from that, but if we were, we would continue to make sure that we are meeting the needs of our students in the Maryville R-2 School District.", says Pohren.
