DES MOINES, Iowa - As spring approaches, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is urging paddlers to wait for warmer water temperatures before heading out on the water.
Despite mild air temperatures, water conditions remain dangerously cold. The DNR warns that cold water shock and hypothermia can set in quickly for anyone who falls in.
Officials say water temperatures need more time to warm up before they’re safe for paddling. Paddlers are reminded to always wear a life jacket, dress for the water temperature with a wetsuit or drysuit, and avoid paddling alone.
The DNR also advises checking equipment after winter storage and steering clear of strainers, which are branch piles that can trap paddlers underwater.
For those who venture out, carrying a dry bag with extra clothing and letting someone know your plans can improve safety. For more information on paddling safety, visit the Iowa DNR website.
