DES MOINES, Iowa - A Bedford man convicted of killing his mother in 2020 has died in prison.

The Iowa Department of Corrections announced that 36-year-old Christian Andrew May was pronounced dead Sunday morning at the University of Iowa Hospitals Clinic.

Officials have not released a cause of death. May was serving a 30-year sentence for the stabbing death of his mother, 62-year-old Penny Sue Godfirnon, at their home in Bedford in June 2020.

Authorities charged May with first-degree murder and willful injury after responding to a 911 call from the residence. He began serving his sentence in July 2023.

The Iowa Department of Corrections has not provided further details on May’s death.
