DES MOINES, Iowa - Now is the time to clean and inspect important boating equipment before getting on the water this spring.

Officials with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources say it's important to regularly examine life jackets for wear and tear.

Officials recommend each life jacket be visually inspected for any rips or tears and ensure all straps and buckles work properly and not frayed.

Inflatable lifejackets should be free of any cracks or pin holes in the plastic bladder with the C-O-two cartridge sealed and stored in temperatures above freezing.

Always store fuly dried lifejackets in warm, dry and well ventilated places out of direct sunlight. For more information on boating and lifejacket maintenence, go to iowadnr.gov and search "boating maintenence lifejacket."
