Iowa officials encouraging residents to visit wildlife

HAMBURG, Iowa - If bird watching, duck hunting, and hiking are just a few of your favorite things, officials are encouraging you to visit one place in our listening area.

In Iowa, hidden behind the levee paralleling I-29, and six miles northwest of Hamburg in the Missouri River floodplain, is nearly 1,300 acres of shallow wetlands in the MU Payne Wildlife Area.

Matt Dollison, Wildlife Biologist for Iowa Department of Natural Resources, says its location allows for several western shorebird species such as American avocets, Wilsons phalaropes, and willets can be found at MU Payne.

He also adds that Copeland Bend and Journey Lake are other locations bird watchers need to add into their rotation.
