Short-term rentals now allowed in certain Maryville areas

The Maryville City Council reviewed a zoning ordinance amendment during last night's meeting. Maryville City Manager Greg McDanel says the council approved regulations allowing for short-term rentals in certain sections of the community.

"This is a new sharing economy obviously through AirBnB, VBRO, and some of the other companies that allow structures to be rented online in typical family households.  So the City Council approved these as permitted uses in the campus town overlay which is just east of the university and also in commercial districts to include the downtown.  Any other structures that are looking to be a short term rental will have to go to the special use permit process to obtain a permit for that."

McDanel says city officials studied how other similar sized communities addressed short-term rentals before the council adopted last night's amendment.

"It's not regulation that will please everybody but it does provide parameters in a situation where there were none to allow for short-term rentals to exist as a posititve in our community."

The Maryville City Council also approved a request by the Maryville Chamber of Commerce to hold this year's Nodaway County Fair Parade on July 20th.
