Robocalls being used to scam NPPD customers

A series of robocalls have been happening throughout the state of Nebraska. The round of calls going out show a caller ID number of Nebraska Public Power District's Beatrice Power Station. Media Relations Specialist for NPPD Grant Otten says these calls would demand money from customers.

"Essentially what they would do is they would call and they would demand payment.  They would ask that person to call back on a different number, sometimes an 800-number, and tell them that they would take their payment there.  So it's just kind of their way of trying to put people into a panic, trying to get them to call back on a different number that's not NPPD obviously, and then getting some of their money so they can scam them."

Otten adds NPPD will never ask for payment over the phone and to relax if you get a call you think may be a scam.

"If you do get a call, whether it's a situation like this or a situation where you think you might be getting scammed, or someone is calling and demanding payment to shut your power service off, call our customer service which is 1-877-ASK-NPPD.  That's our Customer Service Center.  If you're not sure you have to pay a bill or you're not sure what the situation is or maybe your power is going to get shut off,  they'll help you figure out what's going on."

Once again, if you think that you may have been contacted by a robocall. Be sure to call NPPD at 1-877-ASK-NPPD and do not pay for overdue bills over the phone.
