Residents should be cautious with fireworks this week

The Fourth of July holiday this week means many people will be looking forward to shooting off fireworks as part of their celebration.
Maryville Public Safety Fire Captain Phill Rickabaugh says residents should keep in mind regulations on the use of fireworks in the city limits.

"First of all, the city of Maryville has some ordinances concerning the use of fireworks.  Consumer grade fireworks are the only kind of fireworks that are allowed within the city limits of Maryville.  Fireworks that are not allowed is what's commonly referred to as a 'bottle rocket' or any device that is guided by a stick.  Those are prohibited within the city limits of Maryville.  When it comes to shooting off fireworks within the city limits of Maryville, that is only to be done on July 4th from the hours of 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m."

Rickabaugh adds it's important to keep safety in mind when using fireworks.

"Some of the things we see that cause accidents a lot of the times is lack of adult supervision with children.  Probably one of the safest recommendations we can give people is to just go out and enjoy one of the public displays such as the one out at Mozingo and others throughout the area.  But people are going to shoot off fireworks in their own homes and have some gatherings.  Keep safety in mind.  Common sense goes a long way with fireworks."
