Maryville City Council addresses medical marijuana regulations

The Maryville City Council addressed Medical Marijuana regulations during last night's meeting. Missouri voters last November approved Amendment 2 which allows for Medical Marijuana usage in the state. Maryville City Manager Greg McDanel says it was important for the city to put into place zoning regulations concerning Medical Marijuana businesses.

"The ordinance that was approved tonight amends chapter 4 or 5 of that zoning code to allow medical marijuana facilities in designated districts, in certain commercial zones, as well as manufacturing zones with a 100-foot buffer from any education facility, daycare, or church.  That 100-foot buffer is something communities debate quite a bit, but essentially our City Council tied it directly to our intoxicating liquor license distance to provide that justification."

McDanel says the city council's action last night provides guidelines for any potential medical marijuana business that may be interested in operating in Maryville.

"Getting this ordinance approved was critical for those that have interest in this business because the state of Missouri and the Department of Health & Senior Services is accepting applications with the anticipation of approving some of these sites by the end of the year.  Now we feel confident that we have regulations in place for the facilities that aren't prohibitive, but provide us some regulation as far as location and as well operation."

The Maryville City Council also approved a request for a liquor license for Two-10, Incorporated, which plans to open the former Outback Bar under the new name the Powerhouse.
