Deadline for FEMA benefits extended for Iowans

The deadline to register for FEMA benefits for Iowa residents affected by weather disasters has been extended to Tuesday, July 16th.  FEMA External Affairs Spokesperson, Pamala King, says it is important to reach out to FEMA to see if you need disaster assistance.

"The key is for people to not try to determine on their own whether it's a small amount - 'Oh, I didn't have as much damage as my neighbors next door, so I'm not gonna take money from someone else.'  That's not really how it works.  Every case is evaluated individually."

King says that it is best to let FEMA inspect and decide if your home qualifies for assistance.

"So what we ask if anyone who has suffered any type of damage or loss to go ahead and apply.  And let an inspector come out, see the damage, evaluate it and let FEMA determine if it's a large enough amount or what kind of assistance can be given."

If you live in one of the following Iowa counties, you may be qualified for assistance: Fremont, Harrison, Louisa, Mills, Manona, Potowatome, Shelby, Scott, and Woodsberry.
