Dead carp floating in Mozingo Lake

Conservation officials are looking into the deaths of a large number of fish at Mozingo Lake. The fish were discovered last week. Nodaway County Conservation Agent Nate Carr says it appears the fish kill is the result of a virus.

"So right now, we're kind of in a sit and wait position.  We kind of have our suspicions that it might be some sort of coy virus which really only affects the carp within the lake.  Right now we have a few fish that have been sent to a lab up in Wisconsin.  I'm not really sure what they time frame might be as far as getting results, but once we get those results, we'll know for sure."

Carr adds the fish kill of the carp was widespread throughout the lake.

"Looks like pretty much anywhere you are at the lake, you're seeing some dead carp floating.  So I think it's pretty wide-dispersed throughout the entire lake.  Now I would be surprised if it killed every carp in there, because generally, these natural diseases and things of that nature aren't going to eliminate every single carp.  But it has killed a significant amount of them within the lake, and probably throughout the majority of the lake."

Carr says fish virus affecting the carp is not harmful to humans.
