The Maryville City Council adopted steps for downtown design guidelines for future planning and redevelopment activities within the Maryville downtown district. City Manager Greg McDanel says the guidelines come from a study completed in 2009.

"However, nothing was done with the document at that time.  We have since, again last night, adopted the design guidelines by resolution which will allow us to create incentive programs and use the design guidelines as a barometer for approval.  Moving forward, the city plans on creating an overlay district for downtown that actually takes some of these regulations and makes them city code and law."

McDanel adds city officials are encouraged by the willingness of downtown building owners to redeveloping downtown.
