Prairie chicken viewing event planned

The Nature Conservancy and the Missouri Department of Conservation is offering a free prairie chicken viewing event this spring at Dunn Ranch in Harrison County. Media Specialist for the MDC, Bill Graham, says The Conservancy's Dunn Ranch has several booming grounds to see the chickens.

"The males go on to the leks, kind of the mating grounds, always the high hills somewhere.  Also called the booming grounds because the males make this kind of a booming sound ... dance around.  They do whatever they can to attract females in this mating dance.  So the Missouri Department of Conservation and The Nature Conservancy of Missouri partnered to offer people the chance to watch the prairie chickens through the booming on a lek this spring.  It's going to be Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays starting the weekend of March 28th and ending on April 20th."

Graham adds that space is limited for viewing the event and that reservations are required. For more information or to make a reservation call MDC's Northwest Regional office at 816-271-3100.
