Pothole problem will be temporarily fixed

Across Northwest Missouri the effects of winter weather are evident on roads where potholes have been made. The Missouri Department of Transportation normally launches its pothole efforts in March, but with extreme weather this year, the roads are taking a beating. The Assistant District Maintenance and Traffic Engineer Jennifer Sardigal says any cold wet weather will result in potholes.

"How it works, the water gets into the asphalt because asphalt is porous.  When the water gets into the asphalt, it softens the asphalt.  When it freezes, it expands, which breaks the pavement.  The more wet weather and cold weather, the more break up you are going to see in the asphalt, which is going to result in more potholes."

Sardigal adds to be patient and the potholes will be fixed soon.

"We are working towards filling as many potholes as we can.  Realize that this a temporary fix for the winter.  We will have to permanently fix them when it gets warmer outside, because right now we are temporarily fixing them with cold asphalt which doesn't last as long and is more likely to come back out of the pothole.  So using hot mix, which isn't available in the winter months, will be a longer-term fix."
