Northwest Missouri State University is celebrating Black History Month throughout February with several on-campus events.

One of the major events on campus takes place Tuesday when violinist Richmond Punch joins the Northwest Symphony for a special performance at the Ron Houston Center for the Performing Arts. Events continue with Northwest's Annual Soul Food Dinner on February 16th. The Soul Food dinner will feature a keynote address by Dr. Latrese Adkins Weathersby. Northwest Director of Diversity and Inclusion Dr. Justin Mallett says these celebrations are to educate the public about successful members of the black community.

"..provide our students with information and access to information about various components and various black inventors, our black associates, our black professionals.  Just so they can see the diversity in different fields.  The diversity has been a topic of discussion for a long time; it's not something that has just come up."

Mallett adds there is diversity not only in the people but also the events that are taking place

"Just being able to go across different avenues and different areas.  No one would ever think about hey, diversity within the orchestra and things like that.  Just being able to give people an opportunity to see that there's diversity in areas that they like and love."

Northwest will feature a Black History month movie series as well.  The performance by Richmond Punch takes place at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Ron Houston Center for Performing Arts.  The Soul Food Dinner will be Saturday, February 16th at 6 p.m. in the Student Union Ballroom.  For more information contact Northwest's office of Diversity and Inclusion at 660-562-1317.
