MO Senate discussing low-income housing tax credits

The Missouri State Senate is discussing a bill that seeks to place a cap on the Missouri Low-Income Housing Tax Credits. 12th District State Senator Dan Hegeman, a Republican from Cosby, says the proposal has received first-round Missouri Senate approval. Hegeman says another vote in favor of the bill would send it to the Missouri House of Representatives for similar consideration.

"This year we kind of continue on the tax credit reform mode working with Senate Bill 28 which deals with low income housing out there and that tax credit associated with that.  This last year stopped this program entirely issuing tax credits for low-income housing.  And this is housing that typically goes for things such as senior citizens.  It's usually tagged on with senior citizen services, veteran services, the develop-disabled and just low-income housing for need for our communities out there."

Senator Hegeman adds the goal is to relaunch the program.

"And discuss where the general assembly is on how much resources we want to allocate to this program because we have a lot of needs in the state of Missouri.  So whatever funds we can save through this program, we can use for education for senior services, for nursing homes, for transportation, for public safety.  A lot of needs.  Higher education, elementary/secondary education.  A lot of needs out there for the state's resources.  And this will freeze up some money that we can reallocate to programs that the general assembly adds greater value to."
