Hunter Ed class set for March 16th

The Missouri Department of Conservation is hosting a Hunter Education Skills Session next month in Maryville. Nodaway County Conservation Agent Nate Carr says hunter ed is required and for all hunters 16 and older who will use a firearm to hunt alone.

"Over the years, hunter ed has become mandatory since 1987.  Since then we've seen a steady decrease in hunting incidents.  The proof is really in the statistics as far as its effectiveness over the years.  I think in 1987 when they first made that a requirement, hunting incidents were up to about 100 throughout the state.  Now we're seeing about 10 per year give or take.  So it's definitely decreased and definitely important."

Carr also says the course covers a wide range of topics.

"We start off we talk about the history of conservation, why we have regulations, and a big part of regulations is concern of safety.  So that kind of segues into all of these safety practices that we go through throughout the class as far as how we handle a gun.  I'd say that's what we spend most time doing is actually hands-on handling firearms, loading, unloading, cross and offense.  Different types of activities like that.  We got a few videos  that describe safe zones of fire, identifying your target, and ethical hunting."

The hunter education class will be held on Saturday, March 16th at the Northwest Tech School in Maryville from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Prior to registration, the hunting knowledge class found online or done in person will need to be completed. Registration can be completed online at www.mdc.mo.gov
