GasBuddy app could save you up to $375 per year

A new study conducted by GasBuddy, a fuel pricing service, found consumers could be overpaying for fuel.
The study was conducted on more than 7,000 users of GasBuddy's smartphone app and it found that consumers can overpay by up to 375 dollars per year for gas. Head of Petroleum Analysis for GasBuddy, Patrick DeHaan says there are a few things that are causing this overpayment.

"The biggest savings could be had by shopping around.  An app like GasBuddy or Ways can show you gas prices around you and allow you to pick a gasoline station that perhaps is offering gasoline at a much better price than others.  But even a loyalty program can offer you 5 or 10 cents off at gas stations.  If you accrue points, you may get gas discounts.  That could save you another $50 a year.  And running on empty.  When you're running low, you might be forced to pull into a station that has a higher price.  So savings on that certainly could be anywhere from 5 to 20 cents a gallon.

DeHaan adds these habits could be very important as we head toward spring, when gas prices tend to rise.
