City Council approves short-term rental permit

The Maryville City Council held a public hearing for a special use permit for short-term rental at a property on 3rd street in Maryville prior to its meeting Monday night. Maryville City Manager Greg McDanel says the permit was for Faris and Associates at 623 West 3rd Street.

"Currently the property owners are using it a VBRO or short-term rental.  The city of Maryville does not have any codes concerning short-term rentals right now.  So they were directed a special use permit.  Ultimately, after a lengthy public hearing, the City Council agreed to approve that special use permit for a period of 120 days placing a moratorium or placing a temporary probation on any new short-term rentals and allowing staff to develop and draft a short-term rental code for future council consideration."

McDanel adds short term rentals are causing cities to rethink the codes related to rentals.

"Short-term rentals are a relatively new online sharing economy for residential structures.  Many cities' codes currently don't have anything regarding them.  So cities across the Midwest, actually across the U.S., are revising their code to catch up with this new online trend.  It's in a similar fashion as when cities have to prepare for UBER and other technologies that have changed.  It's simply the way the city does business."
