Northwest football returns to Bearcat Stadium this Saturday, and even though Mel Tjeerdsma won't be roaming the sidelines with a headset on, he will still experience a special moment on the field during the game.
Tjeerdsma was selected for the College Football Hall of Fame in January, and he will be honored during halftime of Saturday's game against Missouri Southern as part of the NFF Hall of Fame On-Campus Salute. Officials with the National Football Foundation will be on-hand for the halftime festivities to present Tjeerdsma with his Hall of Fame plaque.
While at Northwest Missouri State University, Tjeerdsma won three national championships, 12 MIAA titles and 183 games in 17 seasons.
In his first season in 1994, the Bearcats were winless. Just four years later, Northwest won its first national championship.
Tjeerdsma spoke with John Coffey about the College Football Hall of Fame, and relived some of those memories as he turned the Northwest football program around. The full interview is available above.
