"Your Farm, Your Business, Your Future" program focuses on succession and estate planning

University of Missouri Extension will host a "Your Farm, Your Business, Your Future" program beginning in early November. County Engagement Specialist in Agriculture and Environment Randa Doty says the program will focus on succession, estate and retirement planning for farms and small businesses.

"A lot of people are looking at how they can pass on their farm to either a younger generation (and we kind of talked about that), or maybe how they can distribute their estate whenever they are no longer able to make those diecisions for themselves.  If people don't have an estate plan, then the state of Missouri has one for them, and that may not be what they wish.  So it is important to address that before somebody isn't able to make those decisions anymore."

Doty also says the program can be a beneficial learning experience.

"They will learn how to set goals assessing the farm's strengths and weaknesses.  They will also learn about the probate process in Missouri.....learn about estate planning tools so they can have those tools before they go to their attorney and talk to them.  So they kind of have an idea of what they may want to focus on."

The workshop will be held on Thursday evenings from 5:30 pm to 8 pm on November 8, 15, 29 and December 6 at the Holt County Extension Center in Oregon, Missouri. Pre-registration deadline is 4:30 pm this Friday.
