Wastewater Treatment Plant approved for Clarinda

The Clarinda City Council met last week and one of the big items on the agenda was the new Wastewater Treatment Plant.
The City of Clarinda is in the process of building a 12 million dollar Wastewater Treatment Plant over the next few years. Clarinda City Manager Gary McClarnon says the council approved two agreements for the initial stages of the plant.

"Doing some of the initial design work right now and doing some of the initial engineering requirements.  One of those of which is asbestos inspection for the existing buildings which will be torn down later.  We're going to go ahead and get that out of the way now.  And also the next one is geo-technical exploration.  What that is they are going to take soil samples of the site for the new plant.  Just make sure the soils are going to be able to be compacted to the point where it'll hold structures.  So both of those were approved unanimously by the city council."

McClarnon adds the construction of the plant is a long process and they expect it to take approximately another three years.

"Right now we're in the design engineering phase and that should be done by December of next year.  So it's a year process and then 2 years for construction.  So we're looking at December of 2021 before the actual completion.  It's a very long drawn-out process."
