Smithsonian Exhibit: Hometown Teams: How Sports Shape America

The Nodaway County Historical Society in cooperation with the Missouri Humanities Council brings a traveling Smithsonian exhibit to Maryville.  Hometown Teams: How Sports Shape America will be on display at the Nodaway County Historical Society Museum beginning Sunday and running through December 2nd.  Coordinator of the Public History and Museum Studies Program at Northwest Missouri State University, Dr. Elyssa Ford, says the exhibit will also feature sports history from Nodaway County.

"That's really something that the Smithsonian and Missouri Humanities Council wants you to do with this.  You shouldn't get it and just have this display up.  Even though the display is amazing!  It's really cool and everyone should check it out.  You'll find something exciting in it.  But you should do other things to really reach out, be involved in your community, and be able to tell some of the stories that maybe you haven't told before.  So that's something that's been really fun about this is seeing all the people who've come out with really fun sports objects that the museum doesn't have."

Ford says besides the exhibit at the Museum, other displays and activities will be available in the Maryville community and on the Northwest campus.

"We've partnered up with the Maryville Public Library and we've got a photo contest called Sport in My Family.  That will be on display at the public library starting October 18th.  And then they will also have a Northwest-focused exhibit.  There will also be Northwest-focused exhibits all over Northwest.  We're working with the new Hughes Fieldhouse, with Maryville Parks & Rec, our Indian and Nepalese Student Associations at Northwest to do things like 'learn how to come out and play cricket'. Just a whole array of not just exhibits, but fun events that you can take part in."

The Nodaway County Historical Society will also have information on the history of sports at Northwest Missouri State on display at the new Hughes Fieldhouse on campus Saturday from 11am to 1pm.  On Sunday, the Grand Opening for the Hometown Teams exhibit will be held at the Nodaway County Historical Society Museum beginning at two o'clock.  The opening of the Sports in my Family photo display will be Thursday at the Maryville Public Library.
