Road safety: Turn around, don't drown

Near 70 roads have closed due to high water in Missouri. Most of those road closings are in northwestern Missouri. Some of those closed roads include stretches of U.S. 24 and Missouri 48. Communication Specialist for the Missouri Department of Transportation Marcia Johnson says drivers should avoid traveling over roads with water on them as much as possible.

"We encourage all drivers turn around, don't drown.  That's the theme everybody likes to remember, turn around, don't drown, wether you see barracades or water over the road.  If you just see water over the road, you don't know what's underneath it.  It could be washed out roadway, so don't take that chance."

Johnson adds less than six inches of water is enough to sweep a car off the road. The National Weather Service says the Missouri River will crest Thursday in St. Joseph at nearly nine feet above flood stage, threatening a residential area.
