October is Breast Cancer Awareness month

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and the Nodaway County Health Department is encouraging women to take the necessary steps to check for breast cancer.
Breast Cancer is the second most common form of cancer in women. RN and Health Educator with the Nodaway County Health Department Kathryn Hawley says there is a recommended way to go about getting checked.

"....cancer is found in early stages before any symptoms appear.  It's just an important step to do, to know your breasts as well as continue with regular mammograms.  The most common symptom of breast cancer is a mass or a new lump and there are guidelines.  The American Cancer Society guidelines for early detection of cancer recommends that women ages 40 to 44 that they actually have a choice to start annual breast cancer screenings with mammograms if they wish to do so.  Women 45 to 54 should get mammograms every year and women 55 and older should switch to mammograms every 2 years or continue yearly screening.

Hawley adds that the American Cancer Society has a great resource for questions about breast cancer.

"Breast Cancer Awareness month is really created to increase awareness about breast cancer and to help those affected by breast cancer through early detection, education, and support services.  And a great outlet is actually the cancer.org website.  It has a wealth of information on understanding diagnoses of cancer, information on finding information on treatment, treatment side-effects, children and cancer, care giving, family outlet and dealing with loss.  All of these topics can be viewed at www.cancer.org .
