National Teen Driver Safety Week encourages good driving habits

This week is National Teen Driver Safety Week and the Missouri State Highway Patrol is encouraging parents and teenagers to discuss the importance of good driving habits. Missouri State Highway Patrol Captain John Hotz encourages parents and teenagers to talk about driving techniques before they start driving.

"We are trying to emphasize the importance of parents and kids talking about, working on and practicing their driving behaviors.  We know that sometimes parents and teens have a little bit of difficulty in the vehicle.  Sometimes emotions run high.  I'd encourage parents and teens both to take a deep breath, relax and focus on the driving at hand and not whatever else might be going on."

Hotz adds if either parents or teenagers are scared about driving there are plenty of resources.

"You wanna make sure that those parents take lots of time to work with their kids.  If they have questions, there are a lot of resources.  Many insurance companies have programs that you can complete with your child.  There's also some schools that have driver's education.  And all those things are resources taht can be used to help teach that child to have those experiences under a training environment so that when they handle them for the first time, they'll know what to do."
