National Bus Safety teaches kids safety

Next week is National Bus Safety week and Missouri State Highway Patrol officials urge motorists to learn more about bus safety tips. Missouri State Highway Patrol Captain John Hotz says it's important to stress the importance of bus safety to children.

"Well, the big thing again is just be aware of those areas around schools that there's going to be heavier than normal flow of traffic.  Till we get used to those different traffic patterns.  Again if you have small kids, whether they ride a school bus, whether they walk to school, ride a bicycle - whatever the case may be - talk to your kids and encourage them to practice things in a safe manner.  Make sure if they're riding their bikes, they are following  traffic laws, that they wear helmets.  Do whatever you can to keep kids safe and help them get back into the flow of traveling to and from school."

Last year, five people were killed and 401 people were injured in 869 traffic crashes involving school buses
