My Success Event helps students learn about future careers

More than 2,500 high school sophomores from 49 Northwest Missouri schools will learn about their possible careers at the 10th annual My Success Event in St. Joseph. 70 businesses and 12 university, college and technical centers will be available to talk with students about possible careers and the education needed to work in those fields. Director of Communications and Marketing of St. Joseph Chamber of Commerce Kristi Bailey says the sophomores will see different companies from all over the St. Joseph area.

"There's a little bit for everyone at this event, and it's really to show kids that there are jobs in all kinds of fields in our area.  So it really gives them a chance to talk and ask questions about the careers they might be interested in."

Bailey adds the students should come prepared with questions.

"A lot of the kids come with questions prepared.  They might want to know what kind of education they need to work in that career.  What kind of salaries people make at different businesses.  So they come really ready with questions and get to talk about what the employees' real work day is like.  That's always an interesting conversation when kids ask, "What is your every day like?  What should I expect if I come work at your company?" or something like that."

My Success Event is from 8:30 am to 1 p.m. October 17 and 18 at Wyatt Park Baptist Church, 2902 North Leonard Road in St. Joseph.
