McCaskill campaigns in Maryville

Missouri U.S. Senator of Missouri Claire McCaskill campaigned in Maryville over the weekend, speaking to the Young Democrats chapter on the Northwest Missouri State University campus. McCaskill has served Missouri as state auditor and now U.S. Senator.

McCaskill says independent voters will be a key to her re-election to the U-S Senate.

"They are the voters that voted for Mitt Romney and Claire McCaskill.  There were a couple hundred thousand votes that voted for Donald Trump and Jason Kander.  Those voters take a look at things like who can get things done, who really knows me and understands who I am, who has a great work ethic, who has actually accomplished things.  I think on all of those things - who is capable of independence and bi-partisanship - I win on all those measures.  So that's why this race is so close."

McCaskill says if re-elected she would work to protect Social Security and Medicare from cuts designed to help recover lost revenue from last year's tax cut bill which she says primarily benefited wealthy citizens.

"This is not the way we fix the hole they blew in the deficit by the tax cut.  My opponent has advocated cutting Medicare benefits in his lawsuit - the prescription drug benefits in the ACA.  And secondly, he has now told the ARP he believes there should be a means testing for social security and that we should raise the retirement age for social security.  That's a problem.  That's not how we get at the deficit they created with these tax cuts.  WE need to take a look at the tax cuts, make sure we protect everyone who is middle class, everyone who makes less than $400,000 a year or even $200,000 a year.

McCaskill is being challenged in the U-S Senate race by Missouri Republican Attorney General Josh Hawley.
