Friday is Buckle Up Phone Down Day

Missouri Governor Mike Parson has officially made this Friday, October 19 'Buckle Up Phone Down Day' in Missouri. The Missouri Department of Transportation challenges Missourians to buckle up and put their cell phones down to promote better roadway safety. MoDot Highway Safety and Traffic Engineer, Nicole Hood says the challenge is simple.

"When you get into any vehicle, you buckle up your safety belt.  If you're a driver, you put your cell phone down or just turn it off if you have to.  So taking the challenge to make sure that every passenger is buckled up and choosing not to use your phone while driving can help save your life.  It can help save the lives of your passenges and the lives of other occupants in other vehicles."

Hood adds following these rules can help prevent dangerous accidents.

"Over 90% of serious crashes are caused by some form of human error and making the choice to text while drive could be considered a human error.  Texting while driving increases the risk of a car crash by 50%.  Actually, as of September 30th of this year, we have 61% of our fatalities so far in 2018 that have involved unbuckled drivers or passengers who may have survived if they'd been properly restrained.  That's why making that simple choice to buckle up and put your phone down is so important."
