Democratic Candidate for the Sixth District U-S Congressional attended Candidates Forum

The seat in Missouri, Henry Martin attended last night's Candidates Forum, sponsored by Maryville Citizens for Community Action and the Greater Maryville Chamber of Commerce. Martin says he opposes the tax cut that Congress approved in the past year. He says the cuts have hurt rural America by reducing funds available for community development block grants and similar programs and has also increased the federal deficit.

"I understand the Republican dogma right now is to cut taxes and businesses will grow.  We have one of the more productive times in American history and yet our deficits are looming.  Not because there's anything wrong with the economy, but it's wrong with the tax cut.  The tax cut was the wrong thing at the time.  Because if they'd done nothing, the deficit would probably be around $500 billion or less."

Martin also criticized his opponent, incumbent Republican Congressman Sam Graves of Tarkio, for failing to attend Candidate Forums such as the one held in Maryville.

"He has not come to this district.  He has not come and held a town hall that is not controlled.  He has not.....in more than a year.  I have people that I go to different towns.  I've been to all 36 counties and I'm going again.  I'm on an RV tour right now.  He hasn't shown up at these locations to be held accountable.  And that's what this job is.  This job is about being accountable and being present whether you like it or not.  You don't have to like everything, but you represent everybody."

Martin is a Kansas City resident who is an Army veteran and has served in education as a teacher, coach and building administrator for 19 years. Martin adds his top three priorities if elected as U-S Sixth District Congressman would be infrastructure, education and justice.
